CHAT ANONYMOUSLY ABOUT STUFF: General Anon Meme

It is what all the cool memes are doing nowadays!

The only rule is, don't be a total passive-aggressive douche. This isn't the place to spew all your vitriolic unrequited blackrom feelings for other members of of our dear fandom--or if you can't resist, at least don't mention them by name, that shit is just a little too petty. If it gets out of hand I'll ban you so fast Karkat would be impressed.

Other than that, hop to it, anons. And TITLE YOUR THREADS it could get pretty confusing all up in here if you didn't!

PS, as one kind anon pointed out, if you want to see the comments in chronological order instead of thread format, put ?view=flat after html in the URL. Or click here, whatever.

I really wish people were more accepting of shades of grey here. What Equius did can be super fucked up without him intending it to be. The chip wasn't supposed to mind control her in general, it was just supposed to make her love him. That's still wrong! There's no need to invent anything else.

It's people using nonwhite and oppressed like they're the same thing. Jewish people may have to deal with antisemetic nutjobs, but few people are going to pick them out of a crowd. I tan really well and can end up as dark as a lighter-skinned Indian, but I'd never get any of the shit Indians get because I've got a different facial structure, wear regular American clothes, and have no accent. Chinese people aren't racially oppressed in China. There's oppression based on skin and on culture and on religion, and they don't have to all mean you're not white.

I think that is really up for debate. :\

The chip was supposed to suggest to her that she loved him but it didn't change her personality, which is why it failed. Doesn't seem much like typical mind control to me? Mind control is what Vriska did to Tavros when she tried to get him to kiss her.

Not saying it's not a fucked up relationship but come on it's not black and white, you can't fault people for not portraying it as black and white. Equius does and says a lot of outwardly creepy as fuck things but his intentions are more or less innocent, and the disconnect is what made it funny instead of just horrible. He has furry porn on the walls because he appreciates art, he rapped to Dave about milk but made it sound like he was talking about semen, etc. Equius might be a lot of things but one thing he's not is evil.

Also, he is 13. Why would you be looking at his mistakes as if it was an adult doing the same things?

I, for one, could do without the Karkat angstfic where he suffers alone and only his redrom interest notices. It makes no sense post-Sgrub. Karkat waves his emotions around for everyone to see and he has lots of friends.

I have an even bigger problem with Karkat angstfic where he suffers alone because his redrom interest is apparently unrequited. The boy doesn't exist in a vacuum. No way does Karkat pine forever without an intervention by Jade and/or Kanaya at the very least.

How is trying to program feelings into someone not mind control? It's inducing thoughts and feelings that would otherwise not be there, without consent.

Innocent wangsty virgin Karkat is so annoying. He isn't always the best with recognizing his feelings, but he's the romcom expert and he wasn't exactly shy about making advances toward John. He's not going to pine silently in the background. And if he tries everyone would know after five minutes of his rants taking suspicious turns, because boy is Karkat not subtle about attraction.

There's a difference between waiting for a girl to get hammered before you make a pass at her and dropping roofies in her drink. One's bad and one's worse.

Yes, this. Karkat's lack of subtlety is also why I have a hard time buying even one-sided Karkat/John blackrom. If Karkat still had black feelings for John, we would all know about it, because he'd be referencing it the same way he keeps tripping over his attraction to Jade.

Well, Act 5's canon, anyway.

John used to have a little complexity, but then the trolls strutted in and suddenly there was massive character glut and Karkat was relegated to the role of Protagonist Of Homestuck.

If people are going to write OCs, I'd rather they admitted to it. Maybe then they'd bother to make up decent ones and develop their characters instead of throwing the canon cast in a blender and writing whatever gunk comes out.

I think Karkat might be on the same characterization road as John now that he's troll jesus forgiving Gamzee.

Hussie's already answered that, actually, on the old Formspring. As I recall, his official answer was "they're stylized, so they can be any race you want them to be."

... which is really not how it works but whatever.

That's a false analogy. The girl chose to get hammered. Aradia didn't choose to have her emotions reprogrammed.

To my mind, what Equius tried is worse than what Vriska did to Tavros. Vriska's power forces people to take specific actions that they would not otherwise do. Equius attempted to change who Aradia was at her core.

Oh but it's okay because "she liked it."

It's quite possible to get hammered without realizing it if you don't have much experience with alcohol as well.

I do think his behavior was creepier, but I think there's a crucial difference between trying to make someone love you and not getting why that's wrong (and even adults make the mistake of thinking things like love potions are fine) and turning them into a full on stepford wife.

She had no reason to have any interest in him at all. She outright stated that she believed he (and Vriska) hated her. There is nothing about his behavior that didn't completely piss on her boundaries.

No one is arguing that. We know it pissed on her boundaries. We can see that's it's a bad thing.

What is being argued is that he didn't do it maliciously, he didn't try to take over her mental faculties, and that he is a dumb naive 13 year old with a perceived unrequited crush who wanted to give her a love potion so they could hold hands and kiss because he didn't think he had a chance otherwise, and he didn't understand why that would be wrong.

If you think Equius is irredeemably bad that's okay, whatever, you don't have to like all the characters, but Equius as an evil abuser isn't exactly the closest to canon.

Since you're insisting he was trying to erase her whole personality and has no positive traits, sounds like you do.

DA

Nobody said that Equius tried to erase her entire personality, or that he had zero positive traits. But by all means continue using strawman arguments to try and pretend that what he did was boys being boys.

No. No, shut the fuck up. I do not want to hear your opinions about which methods for raping women IRL are really bad and which are also bad but still forgivable. If you're going to defend Equius that's fine, but could you at least let me pretend your opinions about what he did to Aradia don't reflect on your opinions about real life sexual coercion?
